The Interfilm Academy's One-Future Award 2003 goes to the Brasilean director

Opinion:
Based on a spectacular case of bus kidnapping in Rio de Janeiro in 2000 which had received a nationwide 4 1/2 hours live TV coverage, the author reconstructs the story of the perpetrator's life as one of the countless street kids of Rio condamned to live a life of social non-existence. The act becomes discernible as a young man's suicidal cry for recognition of his very existence as a human being. His situation as an literally 'unvisible man' is in a stark contrast to the illusion of total transparency created by an ever-rising tide of images produced and transmitted by the mass-media. In establishing a highly intelligent mosaic of dialectically interwoven live TV shoots from the kidnapping and intimate interviews with the full range of involved people, the film enables the spectator to get aware of that illusion and to perceive the mass production of socially exlcuded human beings as a problem of global reach and proportions. The film encourages the audience to develop their abilities to perceive this reality more critically, to re-discover and strengthen their potential of empathy and to get engaged in the task of creating a more human world.

In addition, the jury wishes to commend the movies Remake by Dino Mustafic (Bosnia-Herzegowina) and Swaraaj (The Little Republic) by Anwar Jarmal (India).

Jugement:
C'est à partir d'un enlèvement de bus spectaculaire en 2000 à Rio de Janeiro qui avait été diffusé en directe pendant quatre heures par la télévision brésilienne, l'auteur donne une réconstruction méticuleuse de l'histoire de la vie du coupable, un des innombrables enfants de Rio sans abri et condamnés à mener une vie de non-existence sociale. Son action est rendu déchiffrable comme cri suicidaire d'un jeune homme pour la reconnaissance de son existence d'être humain. Son invisibilité sociale dénonce d'une manière éclatante l'illusion de transparence totale insinuée par une marée croissante d'images diffusés par les médias. En entrecroisant d'une manière intelligente et dialectique des images de télé avec des entretiens intimes avec toute la gamme de gens impliqués dans l'affaire, le film rend le spectateur capable de s'apercevoir de cette illusion et de reconnaître dans la tragédie montante de l'exclusion sociale un problème d'une portée mondiale. Le film incite le spectateur à aiguiser ses facultés d'appcervoir cette réalité d'une manière critique, de (re-)découvrir ses capacités d'empathie et de s'engager pour une société mondiale qui soit plus humaine.

En plus, le jury aime bien rendre hommage au films Remake de Dino Mustafic (Bosnie-Herzégovine) et Swaraaj (The Little Republic) d'Anwar Jarmal (Inde).
