The 17th ONE FUTURE PREIS goes to the film

Anansi by Fritz Baumann, Germany 2002

The film is the story of a small group of Ghanesians, who leave their country in order to establish a new and better existence in Europe. >Anansi< however, is not the common media image of the African continent as place of nothing but war, famine, AIDS, etc. >Anansi< describes young Ghanesians
with courage, vision and ambition. Some of the characters are victims of the false images of life in Europe, the illusion of easy living, and they pursue material goals without consideration. Other characters pursue their happiness without losing their African identity, sense of responsibility to each other, or moral values in general. The Europeans they meet are various characters as well: Some are opressors, exploiting Africans economically and/or sexually; others try to act in a humanitarian way, even if these Africans are illegal immigrants in the eyes of the European authorities.
>Anansi< has an excellent narrative, significant and beautiful photography, wonderful music representing several countries, appealing actors and actresses fitting the characters, and a circular structure pointing to the need for young Africans to build a future in their homecountry. The metaphorical figure of the spider, a.k.a >Anansi<, refers among others to the movement from dream to reality.
>Anansi< is an outstanding film, as a European director succeeds in making a truly African film. The realistic optimism of >Anansi< encourages Western viewers to look at Africa and encourages all viewers to consider the state of our world and take part in changing it: One world, one future.
