AWARD OF THE ECUMENICAL JURY

The 1st Ecumenical Jury at the 8. Miskolc Jameson CineFest (Hungary) has given its award to a film in the competition for fiction film to

Atmen/Breathing
by Karl Markovics, Austrai 2011

Breathing

Indirectly by coming in contact with death people a young man step by step becomes born again into a new life.
This touching story brings the hopeful message, that people can change their lives for the better even after difficult times or violent events in the past.
With beautiful symbols and a classic style the director succeeds in building the forthcoming of the characters while avoiding every touch of melodrama.

The film also received the Emeric Pressburger Award, the main award of the festival, and the FIPRESCI Award of the International Film Critics Association.

Synopsis: Roman Kogler, 19 years old, is serving time in a juvenile detention center. He has already served half of his sentence, and could be released on probation, but his chances are poor: he doesn't have family, and seems incapable of coping with society. After many failed attempts, Roman finds a probation job at the municipal morgue in Vienna. Of all things, it is this job dealing with death that shows him the path back to life.
